One essential practice that can help cultivate a sense of bliss in midlife is the daily practice of gratitude. Gratitude practice can be as simple as designating a specific notebook and time each day to reflect on and write about the things in your life for which you are grateful. It is a profoundly meditative process, does not take much time, and has been shown to improve mood and mental clarity. For me, I do this as I am drifting off to sleep. It always brings a smile to my face and the realization just how many things I am grateful for.

While there are many wonderful apps available (like Headspace!) that can take you through the process of meditation, it can be as simple as setting your phone’s timer for 10 minutes and sitting quietly, focusing on your breath. One way to create focus is to follow your breath through your nose or mouth, as it moves through and inflates your lungs, and passes out of your body again. If thoughts arise around you, acknowledge them and then let them go peacefully – fighting against random thoughts will only distract you. I have found that starting my day with meditation sets me up with a positive mindset for the rest of the day.
